Honda Motor Co. (Honda) is recalling three different motorcycle models due to a defective fuel pump impeller. According to Honda, the impeller was made by a subcontractor and was not built to the appropriate specifications. The defect applies to Honda’s GL1800 Goldwing, CBR600RR and CBR1000RR. Based on their production records, Honda says 17,374 motorcycles may be affected.
Honda’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report to NHTSA
In its Part 573 Safety Recall Report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Honda says:
“The fuel pump impeller was improperly molded, resulting in low density
impellers. If the surface of a lower density impeller is exposed to production
solvent drying for longer periods of time, surface cracking may occur. These
cracks may lead to excessive fuel absorption, resulting in impeller deformation,
interference with the fuel pump body, and, possibly, an inoperable fuel pump.”

Describing the safety risk, Honda says:
“If the fuel pump module is inoperative, the engine may not start or can stall
while riding, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.”

Honda’s repair plan
Honda will ask registered owners to take their motorcycles to an authorized Honda Powersports Dealer. The dealer will then inspect the motorcycle and, if necessary, replace the fuel pump with one that has a compliant impeller.
Honda has already notified its dealers. Owner notification will begin and end on or about April 8, 2024.
